WATSU® FAQ

Do I need to know how to swim?

No. You do not need to know how to swim to experience WATSU®. Throughout your session, your body is supported by me and, when appropriate, by flotation supports. You are not expected to swim or keep yourself afloat.

What if I'm nervous in the water?

That's completely okay, and it's something we can talk about before we begin. Your comfort determines the pace of the session. We may spend some time simply getting comfortable in the water before beginning any movement. If taking small steps feels best, that's exactly what we'll do. Together, we'll create a session plan based on your comfort level, boundaries, and needs that day. You never need to push yourself beyond what feels comfortable in order to receive WATSU®.

How much physical contact is involved?

WATSU® involves more continuous physical contact than a traditional table massage because I am supporting and guiding your body while you float. Depending on the movement, I may support your head, neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms, or legs while gently moving you through the water. Some positions may bring your body closer to mine so I can support you safely. Before your session, we'll discuss what this looks like, your boundaries, and anything that would help you feel more comfortable. You can always ask to change a position, adjust the amount of contact, pause, or stop.

What should I wear?

A comfortable swimsuit is required. Choose something that feels secure and allows you to move comfortably in the water. The most important thing is that you feel at ease.

Can we stop at any point?

Absolutely. It's your session, and you are always in control of your experience. Before we begin, I'll explain simple ways to communicate if you'd like to pause, change something, return to standing, or end the session. Because communication can feel different while floating, we'll establish these signals ahead of time so you know exactly what to do. You never need to give a reason for wanting to pause or stop.

Who may not be appropriate for WATSU®?

WATSU® can be wonderfully gentle, but aquatic bodywork isn't appropriate for everyone or at every stage of health. A session may need to be postponed or modified if you have a fever or contagious illness, open wounds or active skin infections, uncontrolled bowel or bladder concerns, or another condition that makes entering a shared warm-water environment unsafe. Certain cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, balance, pregnancy-related, post-surgical, or other medical considerations may also require additional precautions or clearance from your healthcare provider. If you have a health condition or you're simply unsure whether WATSU® is appropriate for you, please reach out before booking. We can talk through your needs and determine whether a session can be offered safely and comfortably.

Will my face go under the water?

No. Your face will remain above the water throughout the session. WATSU® is not an underwater treatment, and you will not be intentionally submerged.

What are the benefits of WATSU®?

Warm water, gentle movement, supportive touch, and reduced weight-bearing can create an environment where the body has an opportunity to deeply relax. People may experience WATSU® differently, but sessions can support: • Deep relaxation and stress reduction • A sense of calm and overall well-being • Gentle movement and increased body awareness • Temporary relief from muscular tension and stiffness • A feeling of spaciousness and ease in the body • Rest for people who find it difficult to fully slow down on land WATSU® is a complementary wellness practice and isn't intended to diagnose, treat, or cure medical conditions. If you're unsure whether aquatic bodywork is appropriate for you, I'm happy to talk with you before scheduling.

Have another question?

WATSU® can be unfamiliar when you've never experienced it before, and questions are always welcome. You're also welcome to schedule a Meet & Connect Consultation if you'd prefer to meet me, talk through the experience, and ask questions before deciding whether you'd like to book a session.
